Your submission will make a difference to reform the Sentencing and Parole Reform Bill for tougher sentencing to protect the community!
The more submissions, the better chance of this Bill to effectively become official.
The purpose of this Bill is to create a three stage regime of increasing consequences for the worst repeat violent offenders.
Explanation of what the 3 Strikes Policy means:
* Abolish Parole for repeat offenders
* 'Three Strikes' for violent offenders
* Life means life
* Manufacture or the distribution of 'P' should be a 'strike' offence
* Previous violent history count as a 'strike' offence.
1st Strike
Serve the term with possibility of parole (as it stands now) - except convicted is given a first warning, and explained there is no possibility of parole next time.
2nd Strike
To serve the mandatory full term with no possibility of parole - convicted is given a final warning: strike again, and it's an automatic 25-year term (or more).
3rd Strike
After being warned twice of the consequences, and being denied parole - it's 25 years (to life) in jail, period.
The closing date for submissions is Friday, 24 April 2009.
