ANNOUNCEMENT

AAG Press Release

07 Feb 2011
In less than a month, residents of the electorate of Botany will have the opportunity to elect a new MP to represent them.

All the major political parties have announced candidates to contest this by-election, recognising the strategic importance of the Botany electorate, where a vacancy was created with the resignation of long-term National MP Pansy Wong.

There has been much media interest in this upcoming by-election, with a whole host of new candidates and new parties eager to contest the seat of Botany.

In 2008, the electorate of Botany came into the media spotlight for a different reason: On 5 July 2008, over 15,000 local residents marched through the streets of downtown Botany, demanding tougher law and order measures, in the wake of three high-profile murders in the preceding months.

This march was organised by the Asian Anti-Crime Group (“the AAG”), a community safety network formed in 2008, to highlight the need for safer streets and tough action against violent crimes. As a result of the publicity surrounding this march, law and order became one of the major issues in the lead-up to the 2008 General Election.

Three years on, law and order remains a topical issue for many residents. Alex [last name required], a resident of Manukau, recently experienced five burglaries in the space of just three months. He believes that nothing has changed, despite the promise of more police officers for the Manukau region, and that criminals still have the upper hand as police struggle to deal with the volume of criminal activities.

AAG Chairman Peter Low believes there is still much work left to be done to make communities safer. “In 2008 the National Party promised tougher law and order policy if it became government. It has been in government for nearly three years, and there are still plenty of residents who don’t feel any safer, and plenty of residents with stories of being repeated victims of crime. Why is this still happening?”

In order to facilitate a broad discussion around the issues of community safety, victim’s rights and police responses to crimes, the AAG is hosting an open forum a week prior to the by-election, titled “How Safe Are We?”. This forum is scheduled to take place at 7.00-9.00pm on Friday 25 February 2011 at Chinatown, 262 Ti Rakau Drive, East Tamaki.

Present at this forum shall be all political candidates standing in the Botany by-election, as well as other individuals passionate about making a difference to the electorate of Botany. All interested parties in the future of Botany and in law and order in New Zealand are invited to attend this forum.
